Dear Ian Martin,

Now that the clocks have gone back the evenings are darker earlier and the winter is about to well and truly set in.

So you might not be able to spend as much time on the golf course, but the winter time certainly doesn’t mean you have to enjoy your golf any less.

It might be a little chillier on the course, and during the wetter days you may have to leave your trolley in the garage, but in this newsletter we take a look at the best ways to keep warm and dry on the course, as well as focusing on the best carry bags available on the market.

There is also a handy tip on escaping from wet bunkers where the rain has caused the sand to become compacted.

We also have a special competition giving you the opportunity to win a pair of the brand new, customised FootJoy golf shoes - Icon.

Enjoy the news!

Stay Warm and Dry This Winter

Stay Warm and Dry This Winter

There is nothing worse during the winter months than feeling wet and cold while playing your round.

Fortunately, there is plenty of clothing available that promises to keep you both warm and dry throughout the winter, while at the same time not weighing you down and inhibiting your swing.

For instance, Galvin Green Outerwear helps make every day playable, by keeping you warm and dry even in the most inclement of weather.

One of the key features of the Galvin Green Collection is the full GORE-TEX® suits, provides breathable comfort with durably waterproof and windproof protection.

There are waterproof stretch panels located on the back of the garment which allow for an unrestricted swing and a complete range of movement, and a unique rain channel on the cuffs to keep your hands dry.

Available in a Rain Jacket, Rain Shirt and in Rain Trousers with finished leg lengths. Fantastically waterproof, breathable and unbelievably quiet, the Galvin Green Collection Rainwear is a must have for every golfer's bag coming into the winter months.

Over and above the waterproofs in your golf bag I would recommend having the following winter garments to hand. I have listed some of the pro shop's best buys.

How To Master The Wet Bunker Shot

How To Master The Wet Bunker Shot

The first aspect of playing a wet bunker shot is to leave the sand wedge in the bag and take out either your lob or pitching wedge.

The sand wedge has a high bounce angle (how far the leading edge of the club face is lifted off the ground). In dry sand this helps the club slide through the sand and not dig in. However, in wet sand that same bounce will cause the club to skid and bounce into the ball causing you to thin or top the ball, and the resulting shot goes screaming across the green.

The correct method is to use your lob wedge or pitching wedge, which have little or limited bounce. Open the clubface slightly to take the leading edge out of play, and then just swing normally.

There will be a lot less spin than you might get with your sand wedge, but you will be on the green with a chance of making the putt.

If you would like to discuss any part of your game please drop by the proshop to book a lesson time.

THE RACE TO DUBAI

The European Tour season finale will take place this month, when the top 60 players in the Race to Dubai standings battle it out for the Dubai World Championship.

The Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates will host what promises to be a thrilling climax to the season as the world’s top golfers go head to head for the prestigious Harry Vardon Trophy and the bumper winner’s cheque of US$1,500,000.

The Dubai World Championship presented by: DP World, takes place from November 19-22, and the Earth Course promises to be a fitting venue.

Despite only being grassed in July 2008, it has lush fairways and more than 3,500 mature trees creating the look and feel of a mature course.

In addition, more than 20 lakes have been constructed at depths of five metres to ensure pristine water quality, while the majority of the 102 bunkers are filled with distinctive white sand, similar to that used at Augusta National for the US Masters.
